I remember back in the 6th grade when I walked into my home ec. class, as it was called back then, to rows and rows of sewing machines. My friend was a great seamstress at 13. She was always showing up to school with different outfits that she had made. I thought it would be great to create and sew my own clothes too. My first pair of shorts were not far from being three legged. But I worked hard and learned with much trail and error.

During the next couple years I became fluent in my sewing abilities. When I was a yound child of 15 I was hired on at ZCMI in their alterations department. To this day I have never worked fast food! That deserves bragging rights!

Every year more and more lights and other christmas-themed paraphernalia show up in his yard. The yard is ablaze with a crap load of whatever he can find at the local Wal-Mart discount bin. I don't think he has heard the term "Less is More".

That said, I to am guilty of stockpiling the Christmas decor. It even has it's own home as the closet under the stairs has been deemed the "Christmas Closet". The stockpile will stay where it is this holiday season. Except for a few of my favorites.

We have two beautiful trees. One is in my formal living room. It stands twelve feet tall. The girth is five and half feet. The tree has been decorated with the new trendy balls that I purchased at Tai Pan Trading. The piano and the couch have been push aside like red-headed step children. Yes, the tree is to big for the room. At first I didn't like how overwhelming the tree was. But we are adapting to it and the dog seems to think the protection of the tree is a prime spot to take a snooze.

The second tree seems to be less invasive. Only standing seven-and-half-feet and covered in Santas. Probably the only thing I collect, besides scrapbooking material and an occasional notch-on-the-headboard, are Santas for this tree. I am up to about seventy-five. The Santas range from a couple of inches to a couple of feet in size. Don't be afraid to add large ornaments to your tree. It adds lots of texture and interest. Just make sure the large ornaments don't weigh a lot.

The banisters in our house are a prominent feature. They are the first things you see when you walk into the house. It is important to me that they look good. While building the house a couple of years ago we made sure the electrian put electrical outlets by the banisters. This makes decorating the banisters for Christmas a cinch. So I have strung up garland and lights to light a pathway up from the public area to the private area. It's loverly.

Between the occasional nativity, ornaments in a jar, poinsettas in the kitchen and the simple wreaths on the window shutters, I am ready for Christmas. This truly is all about simplicity. Believe me, it is. My "Christmas Closet" still has four or five boxes that won't see the light of the Christmas season...until next year, maybe.

I remember sitting in the back of my dad's old 1958, Chevy pick-up truck with my sister. The wind whipping in our hair as we sat on the wheel wells. Those were the care-free stupid days. It was then that my sister starting giggling like she had a great secret that needed telling.

"Oooo, that's gross!", I complained.

Back then, in the olden days, I couldn't even imagine doing those "special acts". But I have come to appreciate it and I am sure my innocent five year old will also come to appreciate the "special acts"... when she is thirty.

During the last six month I have tried desperately and successfully to lose weight. To date I have lost twenty-six pounds. Can you imagine how much butter that equals, packed around my formerly-known-as-massive ass?

I have never been one to follow though with goals that I set for myself, but this time I have exceeded my expectations. Yay for me! But there's no fast or easy way to lose weight. You can't rub cream on your ass hoping it will disolve your flab leaving you free to eat mindlessly. So I did it the old fashioned way. I changed how I ate and I took up excersize. The end.

It's my philosophy that you should eat things that you love and are good for you. You also don't need to starve. EAT OFTEN. So I have tried to find recipes that don't leave me or my pallete feeling deprived. I came across this recipe on the internet while looking for different ways to cook a spaghetti squash.

I'd heard that the squash was low in calories, a great source of folic acid, and high in fiber. But who in hell likes squash? I know I didn't. But I am adult and figured that I needed to eat my vegatables. Imagine my surprise when my childhood gourd memories betrayed me.

This recipe is a yummy subsitute for normal cheese and pasta lasagna. Dare your dinner guests to taste the difference.

Spaghetti Squash Lasagna

1 large spaghetti squash

(Poke holes in the spaghetti squash and bake in the oven for about 45 minutes. Cut the squash in half and scoop out seeds. Then scrap out the rest of the squash. I usually do this with a fork.

lg. yellow onion, diced
1 green bell pepper, chopped
1 red bell pepper, chopped
2 T olive oil
1 can (28 oz.) crushed tomatoes
3-5 cloves garlic, minced
1 tsp. basil
1/2 tsp. oregano
1 C grated mozzarella cheese
1/2 C grated Parmesan cheese

Preheat oven to 375 degreees. Mix the cheese together, set aside.

Heat olive oil in a skillet and add the onion, pepper and garlic. Sauté over medium heat for about 5 minutes. Add crushed tomatoes, basil. Simmer uncovered for about 15 minutes. Mix squash well with the cooked vegetables and put half in the bottom of a large 13 x 9 inch baking dish. Top with half the cheese mixture, followed by the other half of the squash mixture, then the rest of the cheese. Bake for 30 minutes or until cheese is bubbly and slightly browned. Let cool 10-15 minutes before serving.

Leftovers can be put in individual containers and stored in the freezer. The dish can make a great lunch without having to think about what to prepare. Enjoy eating well. Bon Appetit!

This has been my first successful garden. And a smashing success it was. It provided the family with tomatoes, lettuce, carrots, peppers, onions, herbs, pumpkins and watermelon. In the last month I have canned enough spaghetti sauce, salsa and tomatoes to fill Tony Soprano's year's supply.

And it doesn’t end there. I am so excited for next spring when there's life to nurture in the garden again! Stupid... I know. I am going to have to wait awhile until then but the garden will be working all winter. You see, I have planted a cutting garden. And in the garden are over one hundred tulip bulbs in a variety of different shapes, colors and sizes.

I will literally be tip-toeing through the tulips this spring. But not only in the garden. I plan on cutting the fresh flowers and enjoying the beauty inside our home too. It’s late in the season so if you go now to any hardware or gardening store you can purchase your bulbs at a very discounted price and be able bring the outside into your home.

There are many different kinds of bulbs that you can plant for this coming spring. Daffodils, Lily, Hyacinth and even the little crocus flower. Choose your favorites and don't be afraid of making a bad choice. No matter your choice, make sure you get the bulbs in the ground before the ground freezes. Here in Utah that could be as early as the end of November. I have cheated before and put my Hyacinths in the ground on a beautiful day in February. Just remember that bulbs need to go through the freezing process in order for the bulb to bloom.

Have the best-looking garden on the block and fresh flowers in the house before it's even warm enough to plant your vegetables. Happy planting!

I have great fondness for doors. The first door that I ever purchased was a garage sale find seven or eight years ago. I had been looking for a door to prop in the corner of my living room to provide height and some architectural value in a room that didn't have any interesting structure. It still has all its original hardware including the hinges. For garnish, I keep a seasonal wreath on the door.

Once my old door collection had begun, it was time to find the perfect specimen for the coffee table I had always wanted to make out of a door. So the search began for the right size door.
I learned that older doors are usually solid and can be cut to size if needed so I only needed to get close on the dimensions.

Often, other items salvaged from the same source, like this four-paned window, make a nice matching accessory.

I happened to find a house not far from my neighborhood that was scheduled to be demolished. With the owner's permission, I stripped the house of old windows, drawers and last but not least a small door that would eventually be my wonderful table.

The lady that owned the house told me my door was over 100 years old. Crap! That meant I had to take the time to strip the door so that my beautiful little girls that like to chew on corners wouldn’t be affected by the lead. A little paint stripper and a gas mask made short work of that problem.

This coffee table never fails to grab the attention of new guests.

The coffee table stands 17 inches tall. The 2x4's for the legs were cut with a slight angle and the skirt trim was made with scrap wood stolen... err... borrowed from my dad’s woodworking shop. Both the legs and the skirt were attached with my pneumatic stapler/nailer. That's right, ladies, air tools. Be ye not afraid.

This was a five dollar project, including new paint and a couple of 2x4's. If you don’t have an extensive wood pile at your disposal, don't worry, this is still not an expensive project and has a great payoff in its surprising conversational value.

Under the table is one of The Bitch's favorite hang-outs.

These old doors are an indispensable resource which is why they are the backbone of some of my favorite projects. I have seen many people use doors for shelves, headboards, coat racks and even benches. They are great because you can also find them in any number of places. I have even been known to rummage through garbage cans like a bum to dig out the perfect door.

When scavenging, don't forget to collect all the hardware you can find. Those old hinges, knobs and keys can also be used in all kinds of decorating projects.
